Continuing to round out their web services, Amazon launches Redshift. In their words:
Amazon Redshift is a fast and powerful, fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud… With a few clicks in the AWS Management Console, you can launch a Redshift cluster… for under $1,000 per terabyte per year.
Amazon Redshift manages all the work needed to set up, operate, and scale a data warehouse cluster, from provisioning capacity to monitoring and backing up the cluster, to applying patches and upgrades.
At the least, they are making a statement on price. Their existing web services customers are a built-in market so this looks like another smart move from Amazon into a tangential area. More coverage at VentureBeat.
